Blackpool FC has joined a police effort to address misogyny and abuse at football games. Lancashire Police introduced Operation Holcroft at their stadium, with all six of the region's English Football League clubs agreeing to participate. The club, currently 17th in League One with 11 points from ten games, is looking to improve the matchday environment off the pitch as they seek better results on it.
The project will use particular police methods to demonstrate that sexist and predatory conduct is not welcome. Awareness materials will be distributed among fans. Matchday personnel and officers will get additional training on how to identify and handle reports. Systems for reporting will be enhanced, and there will be a greater focus on pursuing legal action against those accused of wrongdoing.
Chief Inspector Mark Douglas, leading the operation, explained its goal is to change attitudes and provide help to those affected. He added that anyone subjected to such behaviour should know it will be addressed earnestly.
Police and Crime Commissioner Clive Grunshaw mentioned the campaign was shaped by a survey of many women and girls, a vast majority of whom expressed feeling unsafe in public. He noted football serves as an effective channel for outreach, as messages from supported clubs resonate strongly with young fans.
Natalie Gradwell, Blackpool FC's Ground Safety Officer, said the club aims to promote more incident reporting to foster a secure and inclusive atmosphere for all. The initiative launches as the team prepares for their next home fixture against Mansfield Town on Saturday 24 October.
The initiative's introduction follows a Blackpool victory. Their 2-0 win over Milton Keynes Dons on Tuesday 20 October, with goals from Karoy Anderson and Dale Taylor, provided a positive backdrop. Their upcoming home game will be the first conducted under the new operation's guidelines. Chief Inspector Douglas expressed satisfaction with the dedication of club professionals to ensuring a safe and positive experience for everyone involved on matchdays. The team will hope the focus on safety coincides with an upturn in form, having taken just four points from their last five matches with one win, one draw, and three defeats.
