Blackpool's hopes in the EFL Trophy were left in tatters after a 3-2 defeat to Wigan Athletic on Tuesday. An early lead evaporated as the visitors scored three times after the break to secure the win.

Connor Barrett gave Blackpool the perfect start, finding the net after just three minutes. The advantage was short-lived, however, as Wigan took control after halftime. Scott Hogan equalised before further goals from Fraser Murray and Jerry Yates sealed the victory for the Latics.

Ian Evatt, the Blackpool manager, made a triple substitution at the interval, introducing Olly Casey, Albie Morgan, and Josh Bowler. The changes failed to stem the tide as Wigan dominated the second period. Goalkeeper Luke Southwood was kept busy, making saves from efforts by Brad Burrowes, Scott Hogan, and Archie Harris.

For Wigan, summer signing Joe Walsh made his first appearance since joining on deadline day and was involved in the action, saving a first-half shot from Blackpool's Leighton Clarkson. The result continues a difficult spell for Evatt's side, who sit 15th in League One with eight points from seven games. Their recent form shows just one draw and four defeats from the last five outings.

The defeat follows a 3-2 league loss to the same opponents just days earlier. Blackpool now turn their attention to a League One trip to face Notts County this Saturday.
