John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, and his partner Jamie Varley, 37, are on trial for the death of 13-month-old Preston Davey. The couple had adopted Preston in April 2023 and moved him into their home in Staining Road, Staining. During the four months Preston lived with the couple, he was allegedly ill-treated, had indecent images and videos taken of him, and was sexually abused and physically assaulted. Under cross-examination, McGowan-Fazakerley denied trying to deflect and distance himself from the boy's death. He said he had tried to be 'my own detective' to 'put the pieces together'. The prosecutor suggested that the child was used for the 'amusement' of both defendants, which resulted in injuries to the child, his sexual abuse, and death. McGowan-Fazakerley denied ever sexually assaulting or abusing the child. The trial continues.
